Final Student Concert II

Two Worlds of Yiddish Song & The Horizons of Klezmer

The Advanced Instrumental, Advanced Yiddish Song, and Intermediate Yiddish Song workshops draw participants from around the world to join Yiddish Summer Weimar’s ever-growing international community of artists, scholars, and cultural practitioners. Many are accomplished performers and teachers in their own countries who return year after year to engage with the latest artistic and scholarly developments in Yiddish culture, which they in turn share with their own communities. As a result, the final student concert of the advanced workshops offers not only the fruits of an intensive week of learning, creativity, and collaboration, but also a glimpse into the future directions of Yiddish music and culture.

This year, the song workshops explored two strikingly contrasting repertoires: songs made famous by the stars of the American Yiddish theater and songs of Hasidic women that were carefully guarded from public exposure for generations. Meanwhile, the instrumental workshop forged new connections between traditional klezmer repertoire and style and the experimental, multicultural sounds of contemporary klezmer music.

Presented in an intimate and informal atmosphere, this concert invites audiences to experience the performers’ passion, creativity, and willingness to take artistic risks. Join us for an evening that celebrates not only what has been learned over the past week, but also what is still emerging.
