O bscure Jewish-Ukrainian songs and stories of Rose Cohen\, electro-acoustically reimagined by multi-i nstrumentalists Ilya Shneyveys an d Sarah Myerson.
\n \nIlya Shneyveys and Cantor Sarah Myerson d iscovered the unique voice of Rose Cohen through a 2022 YIVO commission. Interviewed by Barbara Kirs henblatt-Gimblett in 1968\, Rose Cohen was born in 1897 near Kyiv and emigrated to Toronto as a youn g woman. Descended from a line of rabbi-cantors\, she brought with her a fascinating repertoire of Y iddish ballads\, Hebrew prayers and Ukrainian folk songs.
\n \nSarah and Ilya b reathe new life into the intertwined stories of Ro se Cohen and her songs’ characters. Atmospheric so undscapes\, electronic and acoustic instruments\, lo-fi beats\, rich vocal harmonies\, sampled early recordings and interview fragments transform thes e obscure songs into lush\, immersive worlds.

Yiddish electronic artist Chaia w eaves together accordion\, vocals\, and archival s amples\, inviting audiences to engage with ritual\ , intergenerational trauma\, and the echoes of anc estral memory.
\n \nRaised in the klezmer tradition\, Chaia was mentored by Yidd ish music pioneers Hankus Netsky\, Jeff Warschauer \, and Basya Schechter. Drawing on often never-bef ore-heard archival recordings and personal collect ions\, she leads audiences on a meditative journey through Yiddish sound worlds shaped by revolution \, diaspora\, and ancestral healing.
\n \nFor this concert\, Chaia focuses on ma terial from the newly digitized Jewish Labor and P olitical Archives (JPLA) at The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research\, alongside additional archival r ecordings connected to the Jewish Labor Bund.
