Obscure Jewish-Ukrainian songs and stories of Ros e Cohen\, electro-acoustically reimagined by multi -instrumentalists Ilya Shneyveys and Sarah Myerson.
\n \ nIlya Shneyvey s and Cantor Sarah Myerson discovered the unique v oice of Rose Cohen through a 2022 YIVO commission. Interviewed by Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett in 1 968\, Rose Cohen was born in 1897 near Kyiv and em igrated to Toronto as a young woman. Descended fro m a line of rabbi-cantors\, she brought with her a fascinating repertoire of Yiddish ballads\, Hebre w prayers and Ukrainian folk songs.
\n \nSarah and Il ya breathe new life into the intertwined stories o f Rose Cohen and her songs’ characters. Atmospheri c soundscapes\, electronic and acoustic instrument s\, lo-fi beats\, rich vocal harmonies\, sampled e arly recordings and interview fragments transform these obscure songs into lush\, immersive worlds.< /span>

Yiddish electronic artist C haia weaves together accordion\, vocals\, and arch ival samples\, inviting audiences to engage with r itual\, intergenerational trauma\, and the echoes of ancestral memory.
\n \nRaised in the klezmer tradit ion\, Chaia was mentored by Yiddish music pioneers Hankus Netsky\, Jeff Warschauer\, and Basya Schec hter. Drawing on often never-before-heard archival recordings and personal collections\, she leads a udiences on a meditative journey through Yiddish s ound worlds shaped by revolution\, diaspora\, and ancestral healing.
\n \nFor this concert\, Chaia focus es on material from the newly digitized Jewish Lab or and Political Archives (JPLA) at The YIVO Insti tute for Jewish Research\, alongside additional ar chival recordings connected to the Jewish Labor Bu nd.
