 ll of this was shattered when war forced Rose Shos
 hana Kahan and her family to flee. In the end\, on
 ly she and her husband reached the last refuge sti
 ll open to Jewish refugees: Shanghai.</span></p>\n

  tens of thousands of displaced people\, Rose Shos
 hana survived as an actress and trader. Yet she di
 d more than survive. She observed\, reflected\, an
 d recorded her experiences in a diary—a </span><em
 >togbukh</em><span> in Yiddish—parts of which were

 an>Inspired by these extraordinary writings\, <str
 ong>Alan Bern</strong>’s sensitive and evocative m
